Nakshatra Sky: where the Moon is today

A nakshatra is one of 27 lunar mansions, each 13 degrees 20 minutes wide, that divide the sidereal zodiac. The Moon moves through about one nakshatra a day. This page shows where the Moon is now, on a live sky wheel, and lets you open each of the 27.

    Common questions

    What is a nakshatra?

A nakshatra is one of 27 equal divisions of the zodiac, each linked to a group of stars, a ruling deity and a ruling planet. Each has four padas (quarters) of 3 degrees 20 minutes.

How is the Moon nakshatra for today found?

The Moon sidereal longitude is calculated with the Lahiri ayanamsa and divided by 13 degrees 20 minutes. The whole number tells you which of the 27 nakshatras the Moon is in. The remainder tells you the pada.

How long does the Moon stay in one nakshatra?

About a day, a little less. The Moon goes round the whole zodiac in about 27.3 days. Its speed changes, so the time in each nakshatra changes too.

Is the Moon nakshatra today the same as my birth nakshatra?

No. Your janma nakshatra is where the Moon was at the moment you were born. It needs your birth date, time and place. You can find it with the Kundali tool.

Why do some lists have 28 nakshatras?

Some traditions add Abhijit as a 28th, a short one between Uttara Ashadha and Shravana. Namah Life uses the common 27-nakshatra system.
